A Project by the University of Rosenheim
Whenever it comes to cost reduction and conservation of environmental resources, energy efficient building has become a keyword.
By participating in the international contest "Solar Decathlon Europe 2010", the University of Rosenheim contributes to the question of how to achieve sustainability and efficiency.
This worldwide solar contest of universities is organized by the Spanish building authorities in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy.
The aim of this contest is to increase public awareness of energy efficient building.
The contest, which has been initiated in the USA in September 2002, will be held in Europe for the first time.
Within the framework of this contest, various universities from all over the world (among them: the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Finland, UK, France, Spain and Israel...), are going to plan an energy autarchic, residential solar building and realize their concepts, respectively.
With technical support by the institutions Fraunhofer-Allianz Bau and ift Rosenheim, the University of Rosenheim has qualified as a participant in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2010.
From the initial 15 concepts developed by student teams, five concepts have been selected by an independent jury.
The remaining concepts had to pass the challenge of another qualifying round, which took place within the university.
On December 18, 2008 the jury once more assessed the remaining five concepts and finally chose the winner.
The concept of the winner team is going to represent the University of Rosenheim at the Solar Decathlon Contest 2010 in Madrid.
Until then, we will be focussing on the construction and detail planning of the building, which will be equipped with cutting-edge technology.
The building is going to be constructed in Rosenheim until spring 2010 in cooperation with the scientific partners and the sponsors. This will allow the building to be shipped in form of pre-built modules to its destination, Madrid.
In the summer of 2010, all the universities participating in the contest are going to present their buildings in Madrid to an international jury and the general public.
Apart from the concept, energy balance and innovative aspects, it is also comfort, design, communication and marketability that are going to be evaluated.
Following the Madrid contest, the building is going to be presented at regional events, like the Bavarian Horticultural Exhibition 2010 in Rosenheim, where a total number of 800.000 visitors is expected.
Considering the innovative potential of the project, a great media interest can be expected in Rosenheim.
