The challenges of the Solar Decathlon competition

Under this motto, students from all over the world will travel to Madrid in June 2010 to present their ideas on the topic "residential buildings of the future?".

Originating in the USA in 2002, this international contest will take place in Europe for the first time. It will be open for the public, to raise awareness amongst the population for energy-efficient and sustainable buildings.

The guidelines, which must be observed by all participants, are defined in an extensive set of regulations. They determine such parameters as the maximum dimensions of the building, the temperature and humidity in the room and the use of household appliances.

After an assembly time of ten days, the erected buildings will be assessed in detail in ten different disciplines, with the main emphasis being on the evaluation of new architectural approaches as well as the integration of solar systems and their efficiencies.

At the end of the competition week, after carrying out numerous measurements and evaluations, the jurors will pronounce the place of the individual teams in the different disciplines.
